XXI Festival of the Black Culture Limón 2019 will extend for all August.

To rescue, mantain and reinforce the afrocaribean values. Is the goal of th XXI Black Culture Festival “Back to our Roots”, Limón 2019. By the Cultural Étnico Negro de Limón.

This activity, declared of interests cultural by Ministerio de Cultura y Juventud (MCJ) and with the support of the Sistema Nacional de Bibliotecas of MCJ. Will offer activities since this 1st August until 31st of August. Date on which the country celebrates “The day of Black Persons, and the Afro-Costa Rican Culture.” Declared as such by law in 2011. As recognition for all the impact this culture has had in the ethnic of progress of Costa Rica.

El XXI Black Culture Festival. “Back to Our Roots” it’s celebrated annually since 1999. And provides educational, civic, and cultural activities. Inviting the general public to enjoy, discover and reflect upon.

“The activities are infuse with the essence of the values of the Afro Limonense community” Said the Comité Cívico, Cultural Étnico Negro de Limón.

Marcelle Taylor, coordinator of the XXI Festival of the Black Culture said. “The legacy left by our ancestors, is closely related to the gastronomy. The language, music, art and history. Trough education we can provide form to this project. To reach the goals we want. That is to say. To revitalize the culture. And incentivize the values of every days life. Trying to encompass all of this is what will make us reach our goal.

In 2011 a law was approved. Declaring the 31st of Agusot “Day of the Black Person and the Afro Costa Rican Culture” Although prior efforts had existed as the reform to the 1st Article to the Constitution of Costa Rica that says “Costa Rica is a Democratic Republic, free, independent, multiethnic, and multicultural” This reform was in part impulse by Joycelyn Swayers Swayers. While the law declaring august as Historic month for the black people was impulse by Maureen Clarke.

  • El 31, 12:30 p.m., Grand Parade de Gala 2019 por el “Día de la Persona Negra y la Cultura Afro Costarricense”, desfile a la usanza caribeña, saliendo del Parque Asís Esna, Limón.
