With 13 projects, the government hopes to promote agricultural recovery in Limón.

Cocoa. 5 projects are developed, with an investment of approximately ₡ 50 million, for the benefit of some 200 small-scale producer families, located in the cantons of Matina, Limón and Talamaca, which will have better production conditions from the distribution of Improved germplasm, training in the use of good practices, demonstration farms to validate species and technologies, as well as the construction of a cocoa storage and processing plant in Matina.

Dairy products. For the production of dairy products in the Caribbean, 2 projects are being promoted, with an investment of close to ₡ 500 million. The first is the establishment of a Collection Center for the dairy production agroindustry in Pococí, Cariari.

It is intended to develop the process of collection, added value and commercialization of associates of the United Caribbean Chamber of Cattlemen (CGUC), which contributes to better planning of livestock production, to direct management of commercialization, to the increase in income of associates and their families and the generation of employment in the community.

The project benefits 40 producers and has the articulated support of MAG, CNP, INDER, and SENASA.

The second project is the construction of a Dairy Processing Plant for the production of fresh cheese, grated cheese, custard and yogurt, with the aim of collecting, industrializing and marketing the products of some 30 associates of the Coopeasemulca cooperative. It also incorporates related services such as sale of agricultural inputs and others in order to increase the productivity of the farms and thus improve the socio-economic condition of families and the community in general.

This initiative also includes the acquisition of a vat for making cheese and a refrigerated truck. MAG, INDER and SENASA articulate efforts.

Sustainable livestock. It seeks to continue with the improvement plan such as rational grazing and assurance of the water network in new farms located along the Reventazón river basin, in order to reduce the environmental impact on that area, as well as the carbon footprint, to while improving productivity.

This initiative joins the efforts of MAG, ICE, COMCURE and the CGUC, benefiting almost 40 families and with an investment of more than ₡ 80 million.

Musaceae. Two projects are developed to strengthen the production of musaceae, for the benefit of more than 100 producer families, with an investment of close to ₡ 200 million. The first initiative contemplates the construction of an infrastructure, in Matina, that meets the requirements demanded by transnational companies in the process of palletizing fruit boxes for packaging and subsequent export.

Also, it is intended to support at least 20 musaceae producers, so that each one has its own mini packing plant to process and pack the fruit, complying with the requirements demanded by international markets, in addition to being able to sell services to other producers in the canton.

MAG, INDER and Japdeva participate jointly in both projects, in order to improve the marketing conditions of the families that are dedicated to the production of musaceae.

Roots and tubers. With the support of MAG, INDER, CNP, Japdeva and the Centro Agrícola Cantonal de Guácimo, they have focused on strengthening the production chain of roots and tubers, with an investment of more than ₡ 400 million for the collection, industrialization and commercialization of Paraffined and frozen cassava, benefiting almost 300 farmers in the Siquirres-Guácimo territory.

Poultry farming. Another project that is developed in the Caribbean Region is the establishment and operation of a poultry farm for the production of eggs, in San Isidro de Florida, Siquirres. The 15 beneficiary families are mainly engaged in livestock activities and have experience in the production of vegetables, and through the 4S Clubs they have been trained in the production of pigs and laying hens.

It is intended to increase the availability and access to protein of animal origin for these families, as well as to improve their income through the sale of surpluses in egg production. This project has an investment of more than ₡ 20 million, with contributions from IMAS, the National Council of AS Clubs, MAG and SENASA.

Papaya. The establishment and development of 124 hectares of Pococí hybrid papaya for export is developed, promoted by the Association of Producers for the Export of Papaya (ASOPROPA) in the canton of Guácimo.

The objective of this initiative is to create sources of employment and income for families in the region through the generation and transfer of technology in the papaya production chain, so that sustainability, competitiveness and equity are achieved through the articulation of the different links of the activity.

This project benefits 625 families, with an investment of over ₡ 2,300 million, which includes the acquisition of a first farm in 2018. The initiative has the support of MAG, MEIC, INDER, PROCOMER, the UNA and UCR universities, as well such as the participation of private companies in the region that are willing to commercialize the production.
