Today we are going to tell you a little about one of our natural products that you can find in our online shop. Bee pollen, another product from the tireless workers of the natural kingdom.

Bee Pollen is made from bee saliva, pollen and plant nectar collected by worker bees.

Bee Pollen has recently become a much sought after and sometimes difficult to obtain product, not least because of the long list of benefits attributed to it.

Today Paradise Costa Rica offers you a list of uses, qualities, scientific information and of course a way to get our product inside and outside Costa Rica.

Its fame and interest is due to the enormous amount of nutrients found in its composition, it is important to say here that its composition is variable as the flowers where the worker bees make their collections vary. The bees travel a lot every day pollinating, so the characteristics of the flora around the hive influence the qualities of the pollen.

The following is the usual composition of Bee Pollen.

  • Carbohydrates: 31-40%. Mainly simple sugars, such as fructose and glucose.
  • Protein: 20-23%. They include 10.4% of essential amino acids, those that we have to acquire through the diet because the body cannot produce them.
  • Fats: 5-10%. The essential fatty acids, linolenic and linoleic, are the most abundant. Small amounts of phospholipids and phytosterols are also found in this fraction.
  • Vitamins: bee pollen is rich in a wide range of vitamins, particularly B complex vitamins (B1, B2, B6) and vitamin C.
  • Minerals: provides potassium, magnesium, calcium, silicon, phosphorus, manganese, sulphur, copper, iron and chlorine.
  • Bioactive substances: its carotenoid and flavonoid content stands out for its antioxidant effect and special health benefits. One of these is rutin, a bioflavonoid that promotes the resistance of blood vessels. Although the quantity of these compounds varies according to the pollen and depends on the floral source.

Is it or is it not medicinal?

Officially it is not and we cannot call it a medicinal compound, our commitment is to science and to be as accurate as possible when describing and/or promoting a product.

Oficialmente no lo es y no podemos llamarlo compuesto medicinal, nuestro compromiso es con la ciencia y ser lo más precisos posible al describir y/o promocionar un producto.

However, you should not expect magical results… The biggest and best benefits come when there is a comprehensive change in your daily diet, ideally accompanied by regular exercise.

That said, we emphasise that there is no evidence that their nutritional value alone has any effect on the treatment, remission or cure of disease.

A Vegetarian Alternative for Protein.

Bee pollen is an excellent source of vegetarian protein, as it contains more amino acids than those present in products such as milk, cheese, meat and eggs. Its contents are associated with stimulating and energising sensations and so, despite the lack of scientific evidence, pollen has traditionally been used to prevent or reduce anaemia, fatigue, flu and colds.

Several FDA-approved pills use pollen as an ingredient in the treatment of allergies and autoimmune conditions. This is because low, controlled, repeated exposure to allergy-causing pollen can generate an immune reaction in the body over time.

If you do not know if you are allergic to honey, bees and other bee products, be cautious about consuming them, consult your doctor or seek allergy testing before including any product in your regular diet.

What can I use Bee Pollen for?

Bee pollen may help boost the immune system when ingested and improve wound healing when applied to the skin. However, it is not clear which bee pollen causes these effects. Some people agree that the enzymes in bee pollen act as a medicine. However, these enzymes are broken down in the stomach, so it is unlikely that ingestion of bee pollen enzymes would cause these effects.

Usual unproven uses.

  • Colitis.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Reduce the side effects of chemotherapy.
  • Allergies.
  • Healing.
  • Sports performance.
  • Protein substitute and complement to meat and other animal proteins.
  • Deflating
  • Reduction of menstrual cramps.
  • Energising.

How can I consume Bee Pollen?

There are several ways to consume Bee Pollen. Consult your dietician to find out how it can work for you. However, here are a couple of ideas of common uses.

For eczema, skin irritations and scars.

Option 1.

½ cup plain yoghurt.
1 teaspoon of natural bee pollen.

  • Wash face with soap and warm water.
  • Mix the yoghurt and pollen.
  • Apply to your face and massage in a circular motion.
  • Leave to stand for 30 minutes.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.

Option 2.

1 teaspoon of Bee Pollen.
½ from Aceite de Oliva.

Mix the two, apply with cotton wool or sponges to the scar gently until it begins to absorb. You can apply up to 3 times a day.

To eat

To eat, mix it with healthy foods. Amino acids and carotenoids as well as proteins are sources of short- and long-term energy. They increase the feeling of energy and freshness and prolong your optimal performance state. So taking it at breakfast, with fruit, or even in hot drinks is ideal.

Our favourite is a cup of Fruit with Yoghurt and why not some cereal, add half a teaspoon of Bee Pollen and enjoy.

Also with hot beverages such as teas or soothing herbal teas. Add the pollen to taste, its flavour does not interfere with the experience of the tea or infusion you are drinking. By the way we leave you a couple of tea options from our supplier Arté Costa Rica.

Consult your dietician, nutritionist or doctor before incorporating any product into your diet or health practices.
