Unemployment in Costa Rica is now 20.1% the highest in history

The last Continuous Employment Survey, published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), until March 2020, a total of 314,153 unemployed people was recorded, however, these new figures do not reflect the effect of Covid -19 in the main indicators of the labor market.

In the case of informal employment it was 47.1%, without significant changes compared to the same period of the previous year. The population employed under this modality was about 1 million people, of which 625,000 thousand are men and 415,000 thousand women.

Work force. The population in the national workforce was 2.42 million people, without interannual variation with respect to the February, March and April 2019 quarter, which registered 2.46 million people.

Working population. The employed population was estimated at 2.04 million people, which meant a statistically significant decrease of 138 thousand people with respect to the same period of the previous year.
Unemployed population.

The unemployed population was 379 thousand people, 102 thousand
more people compared to the same moving quarter of the previous year.
