Based on the optimal conditions that the Tortuguero area has, such as the characteristics of the river, the physical condition of its inhabitants and the tradition of rowing, a project is promoted that aims to turn this community in the Costa Rican Caribbean into the cradle of Olympic rowing in our country.

This was reported by the Minister of Sport, Hernán Solano Venegas, and the coordinator of the Rowing Federation of Costa Rica, Henry Chaves Quirós, after indicating that this initiative seeks to generate an opportunity for the positioning of a different sport, to make Tortuguero a international headquarters for the practice of Olympic rowing and that, at the same time, generates development in the community, reactivating tourism and the local economy.

The Olympic Rowing initiative was declared of municipal interest and is developed by the Rowing Federation of Costa Rica, and promoted by the local government of Pococí, the office of the Minister of Sports, the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (ICODER), International Federation of Rowing Societies, the National Olympic Committee, the Pococí Cantonal Sports and Recreation Committee, the Tortuguero Development Association and local companies.

Chaves explained that since the end of 2018 several meetings and workshops have been held in Tortuguero where talents have been detected and the interest of the population has been awakened to promote the practice of a different sports discipline, “which is practiced as a productive activity and in a natural for many of its inhabitants, ”he said.

Minister Solano and the sports leader announced that, as part of the project, Cuban coach Juan Carlos Reyes, Cuban multi-medalist in Olympic Rowing, will come to the Tortuguero community to train local coaches and athletes in this discipline next year.

“This training throughout 2021 will give the population the opportunity and the ease of practicing another sporting activity, where they can use the resources they have at hand, such as those majestic mirrors of water and hand of a coach who will accompany them permanently, “said the Minister of Sports.

He explained that the project also aims to position athletes in national and international sporting events, but also that the sport becomes an alternative for tourists and athletes from other countries who can come to Costa Rica to practice it.

SINAC installed a space in its facilities in Tortuguero to protect the boats that the project has.

“We work to see young people from the Tortuguero area in the great international competitions, to turn this community into a venue for international rowing competitions and for the practice of this discipline to be an alternative to generate jobs and economic reactivation local ”, said the hierarch.
