In the framework of the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), President Carlos Alvarado met virtually with his counterparts from Norway and Finland to discuss issues such as climate change and global economic recovery.

In his meeting with the Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg congratulated Costa Rica for the digitization initiative and highlighted that it is a great opportunity to work together.

Likewise, they highlighted how the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has increased social gaps, the importance of a timely arrival of the vaccine and the importance of a global health and economic recovery.

For his part, the President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, highlighted the fight against climate change that our country has led.

Alvarado emphasized that Costa Rica will defend the sustainable tourism model that has proven to be successful for our country and both leaders agreed that sustainable development is a generator of local development, which will be essential in the post-COVID-19 recovery.

President Alvarado highlighted the importance of multilateralism and global solidarity and took advantage of both virtual meetings to highlight the efforts of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, which seeks to protect 30% of the marine and terrestrial ecosystems of the planet by 2030.

Similarly, he expressed how the pandemic has hit the economies of countries, especially emerging and developing ones, and indicated that our country is leading the Fund to Alleviate COVID-19 Economics (FACE) initiative that seeks that ” large and strong companies in the world, which represent 80% of world GDP, grant 0.7% to create a fund that would allow long-term loans at fixed rates ”.
