National Library to pay tribute to poet Jorge Debravo on National Poetry Day

Every January 31 in Costa Rica is celebrated the National Day of Poetry, stipulated by Executive Decree Nº 25134-C of April 25, 1996, in honor of the birth of the poet Jorge Debravo, one of the most representative poets of the country.

It is for this reason that the National Library of Costa Rica (BNCR), with the aim of honoring the memory of this poet joined with the Jorge Debravo Foundation and the Poiesis Literary Group to celebrate the National Day of Poetry.

The activity will be held on Friday 31 January 2020, at 5:30 p.m., at the National Library and will count on the participation of poets: Laureano Albán, Lucía Alfaro, Ronald Bonilla, Fadir Delgado, Leda García, Marlene Retana, Arabella Salaverry, Cristian Alfredo Solera and Carlos Villalobos will give a recital with poems by Jorge Debravo and his authorship and there will also be a musical act by Pablo Alvarado Bravo.

For the National Library, It is very important to celebrate the National Poetry Day in recognition of all the national poets of all times and to disseminate their works that are part of that national memory that the National Library preserves and that are available to the entire public., said Laura Rodriguez, director of the National Library of Costa Rica.

Take a look at Costa Rican poetry

The National Library also invites the public to the exhibition “A look at Costa Rican poetry”, which will feature documents by Costa Rican poets of all times. This exhibition is an initiative of the Library and is now available to the general public for free, in the reference area of the National Library until 4 February.

This is at least 10 urns with a sample of poetry from various eras and different themes from childhood to poetry for adults. We have from the first poets who published in newspapers to recent poets of national poetry awards, of established poets as well as emerging poets. We invite the public to come as this is a way to visualize many Costa Rican poets. Poetry is part of our culture and memory as a country, Rodríguez said.

Biography of Jorge Debravo (1938 [ 1967)

Considered the greatest promoter and representative of his generation, he profoundly renewed the Costa Rican lyric by making a novel foray into erotic and political issues. His poems, “La amada” and “Los distintos momentos de la unión amorosa”, are metaforzanced in relation to nature, which confers freshness, naturalness and even mystical character to sexuality.

Poeta fecundo, dotado de gran conciencia en su labor poética y de su significado social. Instinto, cultura y responsabilidad se conjugaban en él armoniosamente. Su poesía evolucionaba a un realismo social de altura poética, lleno de símbolos vigilantes.

Founder of the group Poetas de Turrialba which, later in San José, became the Círculo de Poetas Costarricenses. Participated actively in the Association of Costa Rican Authors and Editorial Costa Rica. In July 2000 he was declared Worthy of the Patric Letters by the Honorary Commission of the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica. (Source: National Library of Costa Rica).
