National Gymnasium for Special Olympics will be built in Parque de la Paz

Costa Rica will have the first National Sports and Recreational Gymnasium of Special Olympics Costa Rica of the Bicentennial, which will be built in the Parque de la Paz, in the capital district of San Sebastián, and will have all the appropriate and exclusive safe conditions for the execution of the sports, recreational and competitive programs developed by the Special Olympics Association.

With an investment from the Costa Rican Institute of Sports and Recreation (ICODER) of more than ₡ 1,400 million, the gym will have a multipurpose court of 800 square meters, heights in accordance with the regulations for each of the disciplines: handball, futsal, basketball, volleyball and other team sports and all facilities will be adapted to law 7,600.

The information was released by the Minister of Sports, Hernán Solano Venegas, who explained that the tender was published in the previous December in the Integrated Public Procurement System (SICOP) for the knowledge of bidders who are interested in the construction of the sports building.

“The purpose of this work is to make available to the athletes participating in the different cycles of the Special Olympics, as well as the technical staff who prepare them, a facility that allows sports and recreational training, as well as the corresponding competitions ”Said the hierarch.

In addition, he explained that a collaborative network will be articulated between the Costa Rican Institute of Sports (ICODER) and the Special Olympics Association, Costa Rica, which guarantees access to people with disabilities to sports and recreational programs, projects and activities, by providing of a safe and exclusive installation to fulfill this purpose.

The project also seeks to support physical education in primary and secondary schools through sports programs for the development of basic skills in sport and the values ​​inherent to the competence of people with disabilities.

The infrastructure will be an important space for community bonding and meeting for educational, training, cultural and social integration activities.

The president of the Special Olympics Association, Carlos Valverde, indicated that for the association, athletes and their families having a gym adapted for people with disabilities “is simply achieving a dream that we have coined for the last 40 years, now the dream will be a reality, ”he said.

“Thousands of children, young people and adults with disabilities will finally have a suitable place to practice sport that helps their full incorporation into Costa Rican society. This good news for Costa Rica comes precisely at a time when we are living through a very difficult moment in our history, but as one thinker said: “There is nothing stronger than an idea whose time has come.” Thanks to the Ministry of Sports, to ICODER for making this dream possible ”, he added.

The sports complex will also have a security area on each side, bleachers in one of the sectors and an enclosure for the location of players, dressing rooms for two teams and for referees, public health services, infirmary, general warehouse, training rooms, administrative office and dining room.
