At a press conference, the Minister of Health of Costa Rica, Daniel Salas, said that INIFAR (Institute of Pharmaceutical Research) is not capable of producing treatments related to Remdesivir, due to not having a permit to import drugs and medicines, nor the sanitary permit to manufacture them.

Faced with these statements, and according to what the Weekly University says, Dr. German Madrigal Redondo from INIFAR, stated:

Import can be done through a Magisterial Pharmacy or laboratory, not through a drugstore, as the Minister says. With the Pharmaceutical Analysis and Consulting Laboratory (LAYAFA) we can import; we have already done it but for research topics. We also have a Master Pharmacy that can help us bring the asset

Una Farmacia Magistral es una farmacia que puede preparar medicamentos bajo la receta de un médico a nivel personalizado o readecuar formas farmacéuticas.

Dr. Madrigal also clarified that LAYFA does have a current health permit and the teams have the knowledge and is fully capable of manufacturing compounds and re-adapting them as soon as the asset is available.

On the subject of quality and purity referred by Minister Salas. Madrigal replied that:

On quality and purity, LAYAFA from INIFAR is the official reference laboratory of the same Ministry of Health. Who more than us can guarantee quality? And about the sterile production, the idea is to produce it at the Clodomiro Picado Institute, which has all the permits and technology, it is even an approved pharmaceutical laboratory for sterile products, “said Madrigal.

Ademán says that in the eventual need for mass production, INIFAR could transfer the processes to the CCSS or another laboratory for its large-scale production.
