A total of 1,370,000 surgical masks, which, not being claimed in customs, passed into the hands of the Mixed Institute of Social Aid (IMAS), were donated and delivered to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), in order to face to the emergency generated by COVID-19.

The IMAS Donations program, protected by law, Law 6106, or the Law on the Distribution of Confiscated Assets, provides material goods to different community organizations, educational centers and other entities that help in the fight against poverty.

In this way, the CCSS will use this resource to attend to the current national emergency situation, declared since last March 16 because of COVID-19.

“The Social Protection System of Costa Rica is one in front of the challenges of our people. For this reason, IMAS joins the attention of this health emergency, not only alleviating the effects on the household economy, but also making use of all our resources to support health actions ”, stated Juan Luis Bermúdez Madriz, Minister of Human Development and Social Inclusion and Executive President of IMAS.

He added that “the CCSS, as the first response institution, requires all the support of the institutions, the private sector and citizens to overcome this national and global crisis. That is the essence of our social pact ”.

For his part, Dr. Román Macaya, executive president of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), thanked this IMAS for his support and pointed out that, “this donation of surgical masks will contribute greatly to compliance with institutional guidelines for the use of this input in the care of patients by COVID-19, whose use is based on those dictated by the World Health Organization (WHO) ”.

The goods transferred through the IMAS Donations program come from goods declared in abandonment and that were not awarded in the auctions carried out by the different customs of the country.
