The President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, and the Finance Minister, Elian Villegas, signed decree 42795-H extending the 15 percent reduction in the gross salary of senior officials and executive presidents until 30 June.

The provision deducts this percentage from the Ministers’ remuneration, which will go directly to the Single State Fund.

For their part, the executive presidents of the different institutions will be subject to a withholding by each entity and this money will be transferred to the National Emergency Commission (CNE).

This measure came into force in the second half of August 2020 and was due to expire in December of that year with the possibility of extension as was done with the aforementioned decree.

With this decree, the Government of Costa Rica joins the effort and sacrifices made by Costa Ricans during the emergency caused by COVID-19 and continues with the measures to reduce spending.

It also responds to the moral duty of the hierarchy to show solidarity with the economic impact of the pandemic on Costa Ricans.
