Film productions from Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic in the 8th edition of the CRFIC

With a wide and robust sample of the best national and international independent cinema, this year the Eighth Edition of the International Film Festival (CRFIC), of the Cinema Center, will reach cities such as Cartago, Jaco, San Ramon, San Carlos, Liberia, Pérez Zeledón, San José, Grecia and Paso Canoas.

From 12 until March 21, residents of these communities will have the opportunity to enjoy 6 movie premieres globally, 31 premieres at Latin American level and 69 debuts at Central American level. It should be noted that 55% of the films in programming are directed by women.

The program consists of 77 films from around the world in competition and exhibition, specialized activities for the audiovisual sector and a training agenda for all audiences.

“With the experience of having“ left San José ”in the last edition, we set out that the eighth CRFIC was in the whole country, from end to end; This is from Liberia to Paso Canoas. We understand that the cultural offer does not distinguish regions, needs to be expanded and expanded with the idea of ensuring territorial justice to access to cultural rights. In addition, the expansion and inclusion means, for this edition of the festival, to understand that the region integrates Central America and the Caribbean, because we are territories that share stories, language, trajectories and in which a multiculturalism full of creativity and passion coincides, ”he said. the director of the Cinema Center, Ana Xóchitl Alarcón.

The inaugural film of the 8th CRFIC will be “The Sleepwalkers” (2019), by Argentina’s Paula Hernández, which deals with Luisa, and her 14-year-old sleepwalking daughter, who live under the inbred rituals of a family in a silenced crisis. Hernández is a screenwriter and director and part of his filmography includes the short films Doce Clavos (2018), Tres Virginias (2013), and Mala sangre (2010), and the documentary Familia Lugones (2007).

8th edition will feature novelties from Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic

As a novelty, the 8th CRFIC will cover the Caribbean region, for which it convened films from Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, to participate in the Central American and Caribbean feature film competition. In total, nine films compete for the Festival awards.

This competition is conceived as a platform to distinguish various sensibilities and ways of telling, but whose plurality underlies the seal of Central America and the Caribbean as a region where its filmmakers share stories, concerns and identities.

For its part, the Costa Rican short film competition includes the proposals of nine filmmakers, who highlight the value of short stories as a cinematographic modality of inherent artistic quality, own characteristics and constant creative inquiry.

In recognition of the winners of these two competitive sections, in addition to delivering the CRFIC statuette, the Festival will award ¢ 7 million colones ($ 12K USD) in incentives and support to filmmakers: a ¢ 1 million prize for the best short National, a ¢ 3 million prize for the best Costa Rican feature film, and a ¢ 3 million prize for the best feature film in Central America and the Caribbean.

Dedicated to this edition


On this occasion, the dedicated filmmaker of the 8th CRFIC is the Canadian Denis Côté (1973), from whom a retrospective with five of his films will be screened, characterized by being abstract compositions, with rhythmic montages and approaches with murky distinctions between documentary and fiction: Carcasses (2009); Curling (2010); Bestiary (2012); A Skin so Soft (2017); and Ghost Town Anthology (2019).

The programming of the 8th CRFIC, in addition, is made up of seven exhibition sections: Panorama, Radar, Queer Cinema, Last Round, Youth, Costa Rican Window and Special Presentations.

These sections present films of recent invoice, some distinguished with nominations for awards such as the Oscar, the Palme d’Or of the Cannes Festival and the Teddy Award of the Berlin Festival, among other awards of great international prestige.

The nominations for For Sama, by Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts, and Honeyland, by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov (Oscar 2020) stand out; Bacurau, by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, and Portrait of a woman in flames, by Céline Sciamma (Golden Palm of the Cannes Film Festival 2019); Diego Maradona, of Asif Kapadia (BAFTA 2020); and Searching Eva, from Pia Hellenthal (Teddy Award of the Berlinale 2019).

They add, among others, the films System Crasher, by Nora Fingscheidt, and Monkeys, by Alejandro Landes, winners of the 2019 TIFF Awards; and The invisible life of Eurídice Gusmão, by Karim Aïnouz, recognized with the Un Certain Regard award from Cannes 2019.

For the artistic director of the CRFIC, Raciel del Toro, “the programming of films is varied in styles, genres and modalities of representation, because it is imperative that our Festival exhibits proposals for different types of audiences. The CRFIC must be consolidated as an event that, above all, respects and challenges its audience. And in turn, it must be designed in a way that not only seeks the entertainment of an alienated mass, but that such amusement also encourages the opening of understanding, through the projection of other ways of narrating, or even not narrating, but to feel the audiovisual language ”.

Jurors of competing films

For this eighth edition of the CRFIC, the jury of the Central American and Caribbean feature film competition consists of Ana Domb Krauskopf (Costa Rica), researcher, consultant and currently Professor of User Experience at Lead University; Heather Haynes (Canada / United States), senior international programmer for the International Documentary Film Festival of Canada Hot Docs (the largest documentary film festival in North America); and Mauricio Alfredo Ovando (Bolivia), founder and director of the Radical Film Festival since 2014.

In the case of the jury of the national short film competition, the members are: José Luis Torres Leiva (Chile), director, screenwriter, producer and editor; Milena Salazar Sánchez (Costa Rica), director, editor and documentary film programmer in Vancouver; and Vanesa Fernández Guerra (Spain), director of ZINEBI International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Bilbao.

As usual, the CRFIC proposes its Industry section, a space that has been strengthening year after year, as it increasingly generates more interest from international guests as a focus of visibility of the films that are being born in Central America.

The industry preselection committee was composed of the filmmaker Iván Porras, and the producers Natalia Cartín and María Fernanda Carvajal (all of Costa Rica), who chose from the total of proposals received eight (8) that will compete in the Project Presentation Forum, of Costa Rican filmmakers, and six (6) in post-production Cinema, from Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama.


In the Training space, the 8th CRFIC organizes 16 activities, with workshops, for selected people who will learn tools in different areas of the film industry, and discussion tables and talks, for the general public.

The headquarters of Industry and Training CRFIC are the rehearsal room of the National Theater Company, the Cinema Center, the School of Collective Communication of the University of Costa Rica, the Veritas University and Teor / Ethics.

The remuneration for the winners of the Project Presentation Forum consists of a prize of two and a half million (¢ 2,500,000) of colones and for Cinema in postproduction of two prizes of two and a half million (¢ 2,500,000) of colones each one. Also the selected proposals will receive prizes in kind.

The prices will be the following: ¢ 2000 general; ¢ 1500 students. Free entry for older adults and outdoor screenings at the headquarters of Cartago.
