More than 50 reproductions of posters, of various formats and with various purposes, make up Expoafiches, an exhibition of posters from the National Archive of Costa Rica, currently offered to the public by the José Figueres Ferrer Cultural and Historical Center (CCHJFF), in San Ramón.

The sample presents posters made from 1901 to 2018, which show the evolution of the poster and graphic design in Costa Rica, as well as the topics of interest in the country and the use that has historically been given to this graphic resource.

ExpoAfiches will be available to the public until November 7, 2020, during CCHJFF hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. at 4 p.m., with free admission.

“Exhibitions like this one not only tell the story of the object itself, but also that of the society that uses and generates them,” reported the CCHJFF.

“The documentary exhibition ExpoAfiches is made up of a rich selection from the collection of posters of the National Archive of Costa Rica, which are a reflection of our country’s development, with various thematic interests that will allow visitors to make a leap back in time. That trip, at the same time, will be a mirror of the evolution of part of our contemporary Costa Rica; that of the country that will approach the bicentennial with important environmental, cultural, economic, health challenges, and many other areas, which have sunk their roots in this story that these wonderful posters now tell us, ”commented Hugo Pineda Villegas, director of the CCHJFF .

The exhibition is made up of a representative part of the ANCR poster collection, a little-known heritage. The selection was made from the study and exhaustive analysis of its more than 8,800 copies, to show the public some of the themes of the collection, that is: artistic activities, nature, educational themes, ephemeris and a space dedicated to the most important pieces. old from the collection.

Among the latter, for example, the oldest poster-type document in Costa Rica stands out: an advertisement for the Modern Theater, dated May 28, 1913, in which the “notable Robertson comic-lyrical and variety company” is announced. You can also see the oldest document of this type from abroad, which corresponds to a commemoration of May 1, in Italy. It is therefore an opportunity to travel back in time, to San José in the early twentieth century or even outside national borders.

Carmen Campos, deputy director general of the ANCR, and who accompanied the production process of the exhibition, considers that a large part of the contribution of this effort consists in making the collection of posters known and stimulating discussion about its importance as an archive document. “Among other things, the posters are evidence of a specific historical moment and they are documents that also have great graphic appeal. Likewise, we have the expectation that a large number of people will be motivated to donate copies and this way this part of the documentary heritage of Costa Rica will grow ”, added Campos.

Posters have been integrated into the urban landscape in almost every city in the world, and are important visual records of modern societies. Each poster gives an account of events, events, projects, values and ideals of a country, a social group, a company, organization or institution, of an event or activity.

The exhibition is located in the gallery, on the first floor of the CCHJFF building. To observe it, visitors must comply with the health security procedures established by the institution for public entry; among them, entering with a mask or face shield, washing hands at the entrance of the building, taking a temperature, distance of at least 1.8 meters between people or between social bubbles, and a 50% decrease in capacity.
