Explore the history of Puntarenas through photos, newspapers, books, magazines and maps

Get to know the history of the province of Puntarenas through a sample of the documentary heritage that includes newspapers, books, maps, old and modern magazines, photographs and old postcards, which are part of the graphic exhibition “A look at our provinces: Puntarenas ”, Which will open the National Library of Costa Rica (BNCR), this Thursday, February 6, at 5 pm, at its facilities.

“Through this exhibition we want people to be able to observe the culture of the province of Puntarenense through an art show of several artists from the province and with documents about the history of Puntarenas. We will have works by artists such as: Isidro Con Wong, Hernán Pérez, Heidy Jaén, Argenis Herrera, Melvin Izaguirre, Steven Pinel, Zury Hernández and Paula Isabel Vargas and the illustrator Olga Anaskina, ”said Laura Rodríguez, director of the National Library of Costa Delicious.

The National Library joined the Regionalization Program of the UNED, CamaleonArt and the Cultural Project of the Hotel Tioga, to present this exhibition that will be open to the public from February 6 to 28, with a Monday to Friday schedule from 8 a.m. at 6 p.m., on the first floor of the National Library. During the inauguration a recital will be presented by puntarenenses musicians.


In total, 20 works of art, 40 old photographs, more than 100 documents such as newspapers, maps, books and others dating from the 19th century will be exhibited. Most of the documents belong to the National Library and others belong to private individuals who lent them to give visitors the opportunity to learn about the history and development of this province. The photographs were also provided by Fernando Leitón, Carlos Salazar, and Jorge León.

“The theme of this occasion is the province of Puntarenas, its history, development and culture. The documents are from various authors, such as Cleto González Víquez and Francisco María Núñez to photographers such as Amando Céspedes, among others, ”said Rodríguez.

As Rodríguez explained this activity is the first of several that will be carried out during this year 2020 and during 2021 as part of the celebrations of Camino al Bicentenario. An exhibition dedicated to the province of Limón is scheduled for March.

“The purpose of these exhibitions is to provide visitors with the opportunity to know the documents that are part of the National Library collections and the historical memory of our provinces and show the public the culture of each one of them,” Rodríguez concluded.
