Donald Trump said early Friday that he and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus, a stunning announcement that plunges the country deeper into uncertainty just a month before the presidential election.

The White House physician said the president is expected to continue carrying out his duties “without disruption” while recovering. His close aide Hope Hicks tested positive, President Trump announced that he and the First Lady have COVID-19. According to a letter from the president’s physician, the president and Melania Trump “are both well at this time.”

Trump’s positive diagnosis throws both his administration and the election into tremendous chaos, raising unprecedented questions from how he’ll handle the duties of the presidency to whether others in the administration have been infected to how voters will react. There are just 32 days until the election and unless the president ignores quarantine procedures recommended by the CDC, he will spend the next two weeks in isolation – meaning the next debate may be canceled, along with all his rallies during that period.

The New York Times reports that President Trump has cold-like symptoms from the coronavirus. At his golf club in Bedminster, NJ on Thursday, the president reportedly appeared “lethargic,” and he fell asleep on Air Force One on the way back from his rally in Minnesota on Wednesday night.

South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham said he spoke with the president on Friday morning, and that he seemed in “good spirits.”
