The Government of the Republic announced this Thursday the commitment to accelerate the execution of mega road infrastructure projects as the engine for the reactivation of the national economy, once the crisis generated by COVID-19 has been overcome.

These are, among others, the works for the San José-Cartago concession; San José-Río Frío and the expansion of Route 27, as well as the highway between San José and San Ramón, which is administered by the Ruta 1 Trust. The plan amounts to $ 1,940 million.

“Public investment in alliance with the private sector will be the engine for economic recovery when we overcome the pandemic and start a new way of life,” said President Carlos Alvarado, in a virtual press conference in which the ministers of Public Works participated. and Transport, Rodolfo Méndez Mata, of National Planning and Economic Policy, Pilar Garrido, and Liaison with the private sector, André Garnier, and the technical secretary of Concessions, José Manuel Sáenz.

The president stated that, on the road to reviving the economy, it is necessary to control the health situation, maintain social peace and economic stability, as well as carry out another series of modernization reforms in parallel with the promotion of the work public.

From his home, in compliance with the measures given by the Ministry of Health, Minister Méndez Mata said that to get out of the crisis, it is essential to activate investment in infrastructure, which is a generator of employment and a driving force for recovery. economic.

Coincidentally, Mideplan’s hierarchy, Pilar Garrido, commented that “a fundamental element of the recovery phase, to face the economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, is to accelerate infrastructure projects by promoting alternative mechanisms, such as public-private partnerships. Public investment is critical to promote economic growth, incentivize employment, guarantee better goods and services to citizens and to get back on the road to fiscal sustainability, “he said.

For his part, Minister Garnier commented that “economic recovery will only be possible with joint work between the public and the private, and this is a good example of a strategic alliance.”
