One thousand cattle farms located throughout the national territory apply eco-competitiveness and sustainability practices, mitigate greenhouse gases (GHG) and are adapted to climate change, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), counted as achievements of the National Strategy for Low Carbon Livestock, and its main tool, the NAMA Livestock.

The minister of this portfolio, Renato Alvarado, highlighted that these adaptation and mitigation measures also increase “the profitability of the farm, since they reduce costs, make the activity more resilient, efficient and productive, increasing the income of families, which it generates a win-win relationship, which only generates benefits for production and the environment ”.

As part of the process, measures such as rational grazing, fertigation of slurry and bioles, rainwater harvesting, establishment of forage banks, records management, improvement of pastures and protected environments, among others, are implemented in these farms, in order to generate a substantial change in the way of production.

The MAG hierarch added that Costa Rican livestock is different from any other type of livestock in the world, because it conserves 18% of the national territory as forests and protects more than 20 million trees scattered in pastures.

“It is a positive carbon sector, according to data backed by the MAG’s National Livestock Program, which protects water recharge areas by supplying water to a large part of the country’s population. And all of the above is achieved, without detriment to the profitability and quality of the product ”, stressed the chief.

For her part, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Andrea Meza, as environmental rector, highlighted the work of the institutions working on this project and pointed out that, “this project shows us that it is possible to generate quality jobs in a sustainable way and protecting our ecosystems. As one of the axes of the National Decarbonization Plan, the low-carbon actions of livestock are key to achieving our vision of well-being. I congratulate the institutions of the livestock sector for this milestone ”, he said.
