CCSS ambulances are modified to transport with highly infectious diseases

The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) began, since last Tuesday, April 28, the modification of 104 ambulances with the aim of adapting them for the transfer of patients COVID-19, announced today the executive president of the CCSS, doctor Román Macaya.

So far 38 ambulances have been modified; It is expected to have at least 20 modified units per week, said the hierarch.

Macaya Hayes explained that the modifications will improve the transfer conditions in order to provide the required and safe care to patients with COVID-19.

He added that these modifications in the same way will also serve to transport other patients who need this special support due to the severity of their condition such as heart attacks, accidents, severe infections, heart attacks or bleeding in the brain, burns, among others.

The CCSS has 310 ambulance units and in the last two years the new fleets have all the conditions for the transfer of patients.

Dr. Macaya Hayes reported that the Comptroller General of the Republic (CGR) approved direct contracting with a suitable bidder, for a maximum amount of ¢ 54,690,000.00 (fifty-four million six hundred and ninety thousand colones).

The hierarch detailed the modifications that are being made:

  • Placement of a partitioning screen between the driver’s cabin and the patient transfer module, allowing the driver to be isolated from virus particles.
  • Installation of a power inverter that transforms 12v electrical fluid (usual for vehicles) to 120v, allowing different medical equipment to be connected for cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures, ventilation, among others.
  • Having an oxygen cylinder with the capacity to meet the need for transfers from rural areas, limiting that oxygen is essential for the support of patients with respiratory difficulties, being one of the main effects of COVID 19. Therefore, the readjustment and assurance of a suitable space to install a 3500mm oxygen cylinder.
  • For the care and monitoring of patients, it is required that the ambulance seats are placed in an assistance way towards the stretcher, therefore, it is necessary to carry out a retrofitting in some units, which have the seat provided towards the front of the vehicle.
