Art City Tour 2021: Virtual edition will review the value of culture in the run-up to 200 years of Independence.

“Por Chepe desde casa” is the name of the virtual edition of the Art City Tour, which begins this year on Thursday 11 February at 7 p.m., via streaming, with the participation of nine spaces that will allow the public to virtually tour cultural sites, works, collections and architecture, in the company of experts.

The Art City Tour is an initiative of GAM Cultural that seeks to bring art and urban culture closer to Costa Ricans.

The activities are free of charge for the public; only prior registration is required, on the website Once the registration is completed, the person will receive an e-mail as official registration, as well as the link to connect to the transmission.

“This February 11th we inaugurate the twelfth season of our programme of cultural tours, Art City Tour, with the second season of its virtual editions ‘Por Chepe desde casa’. In this first event of the year, with the section ‘Route to the Bicentenary’, we begin the commemorations in honour of the 200th anniversary of our national independence, as well as the recognition of the value that the cultural sector contributes to our identity and representativeness as a society”.

The participating spaces invite the public to get up close to unique and undisclosed details, making it an ideal option to celebrate the Bicentenary year and the Day of Love and Friendship, in the company of family bubbles.

“Emisarias de la lluvia”, un acercamiento a las ranas y sapos desde la perspectiva arqueológica, etnográfica y biológica

The Philatelic Museum presents the artist illustrator Alex Núñez, and the graphic designer of Correos de Costa Rica, Cristian Ramírez. Both are the main architects behind the collection “Towards the Bicentenary of Independence”. Alex Núñez has collaborated with three postal issues, for three consecutive years. In this approach we will learn about the illustrator’s techniques, the work of digitalisation of the artwork, and the application of graphic design to achieve a stamp that represents the Costa Rican identity inside and outside the country.

The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design presents the creative process “Nubarrón de casa”, a record of the improvisation sessions of the artist Lucía Howell, during the first months of the pandemic, on the exploration of the museum space in Room 1. The performance practice, the body, sound and projections favour the development of her artistic practice.

The Museo de Arte Costarricense presents a first-person interview with the curator of the exhibition “Disifredo Garita. Crossing the Threshold”, María Enriqueta Guardia. It is an opportunity to discover, in the works on display, the value that the figure of Disifredo Garita contributed to the Costa Rican aesthetics of 20th century art, through paintings between the natural and the imaginary, full of fantasy and colour.

In the collections of the National Museum of Costa Rica, specifically that of sacred art, an iconic piece stands out, where heaven and hell are the protagonists and, in the middle, the whole imaginary of religious beliefs; it is known as the “camarín de la Virgen del Rescate” (the “dressing room of the Virgin of the Rescue”).

It is little known that in the early years of the old Central Penitentiary of San José there were also women serving sentences behind its walls. The Prison Museum deals with the subject of women deprived of their freedom at the end of the 19th century with an approach to the situation they lived through, the most common crimes they committed and how they were judged by the prison system of the time.

During 2020, the National Insurance Institute, under the supervision of the Centre for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage, carried out an exhaustive restoration and structural reinforcement of the Old Central Fire Station of San José, with the purpose of restoring its beauty, original splendour and providing it with an adequate use. The building was an expression of Art Deco in national architecture in the 1930s.

The Museums of the Central Bank exhibit “Emissaries of the rain”, an approach to frogs and toads from an archaeological, ethnographic and biological perspective. These animals were water deities, begetters of dynasties, bearers or thieves of fire, guardians of bodies and the passage of souls, producers of life and emissaries of rain.

The National Gallery traces the beginnings of “Collage” in European art and in the work of its main exponents: Picasso and Juan Gris. The adoption in Costa Rica with an approach to the works of the artists Marijose Terán and Zulay Soto, the latter as the main exponent of this technique in the country, and Marijose with the use of collage as a resource to achieve more expressive force through textures.

The corner of the emblematic headquarters of the Alianza Francesa is transformed at night into a battlefield, where trans women experience constant acts of violence. Natalia Porras, artist and muralist, captured this harsh reality on the walls of that same corner, and narrates with her art the life journey of a trans woman. She herself tells the story of the process of creation and the result of occupying these spaces.

The Art City Tour is a project promoted by GAM Cultural, which was born in February 2010 and has brought, in its 61 physical editions, more than 116,029 people to an urban cultural experience that allows them to rediscover Josephine spaces and reappropriate them.
