In the framework of the visit to Costa Rica of the British minister and president of COP26, Alok Sharma, this Thursday the high hierarch traveled to the Finca Aquiares Coffee Estate, Carbon Neutral under the scheme of the Country Program of Carbon Neutrality of MINAE, located in the canton of Turrialba, to verify the work carried out by the owners in terms of sustainable practices applied to the large agricultural scale.
On his tour of the sugar canton, Sharma, he was accompanied by the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, the First Lady, Claudia Dobles and the Minister of Environment and Energy, Andrea Meza, who observed the farm’s coffee production process , promoting healthy ecosystems and supporting the sustainable management of land, water and natural resources.
In fact, in recent decades more than 50 thousand shade trees have been planted, creating natural corridors along streams and springs. In addition, it is one of the farms benefiting from the NAMA Café (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action) program and received technical assistance to coffee mills interested in combating climate change.
The Aquiares team has generated an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, also generating work to conserve river valleys as forests, planting trees along the rivers that allows the bio-environment cycle of the farm to continue. normal life patterns with minimal human disruption.
In this context, the Costa Rican authorities detailed that the farm is a model that is sought to be replicated in other properties in the country within the framework of the National Decarbonization Plan in taking actions to generate resilience from the territories and, in line with the Policy National Adaptation.
During their visit to the farm, President Alvarado and the president of COP26 spoke with the local organic producer, Sonia Gómez, who has been able to see the impact of climate change on her crops, which is why she has been promoting organic agriculture for 16 years. to help reduce the impact on the environment.
Environmental actions. Both President Alvarado and Minister Meza, informed the President of COP26 that the country has implemented 90.7% of the goals by 2022 in execution, of the National Decarbonization Plan 2018-2050, promoted by the Government of the Republic, which this year celebrates its second anniversary since its presentation in February 2019.
Taking advantage of the visit of the hierarch, the Costa Rican authorities explained that among the advances achieved they have been able to develop agricultural and livestock systems, waste projects with local governments, creation of Urban Natural Parks, launch of the pilot of electric buses and dozens of projects in mobility.
Likewise, they detailed that the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) and the National Power and Light Company (CNFL), fulfilled the goal of maintaining a 100% renewable electricity matrix in 2020. In addition, 5 high consumption companies have been advised by ICE within the framework of the Energy Efficiency Program under the ISO 50001 standard.
Boost to electric mobility. Before traveling to Turrialba, this Thursday the Costa Rican president, the First Lady and the Minister of Environment and Energy, together with the president of COP26, Alok Sharma, visited a fast charging center for electric vehicles located in the Federated College of Engineers and Architects of Costa Rica.
In total, the country has 39 fast chargers, of which 32 are from ICE, six belong to the CNFL and one was provided by JASEC in Cartago. The national cargo network –which has 121 semi-fast centers and 53 throughout the country- favors the conditions so that more and more people choose to purchase zero-emission vehicles.
About COP26. COP26 is the annual summit celebrated by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will be held this year in Glasgow, United Kingdom, from November 1 to 12. The President of the COP is the figure in charge of politically coordinating the conference.
