Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention (CNE) raised the alert status from yellow to orange in the cantons of Belén and Flores in the province of Heredia, Goicochea in the province of San José y Esparza in the province of Puntarenas and the districts of Quesada in the canton of San Carlos in the province of Alajuela.

This is due to the increase that occurred in the canton of Belén, where it went from 43 cases -which were reported the week of September 7 to 13- to 57 positive cases, which were reported from September 21 to 27.

As for Flores, it increased from 34 cases – from the week of September 7 to 13 – to 55 positive cases from September 21 to 27.

Goicoechea, went from 238 cases -which were reported the week of September 7 to 13- to 277 positive cases, which were reported from September 21 to 27.

For its part, Esparza increased from 53 cases – from the week of September 7 to 13 – to 91 positive cases from September 21 to 27.

Regarding the district of Quesada, this increased its number of cases from 242 -which were reported the week of September 7 to 13- to 316 positive cases from September 21 to 27.

Due to the above and the epidemiological assessment by the Ministry of Health, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) and the Situation Analysis Room, the alert changes in the cantons.

For their part, the cantons of San Rafael and Barva lower their orange alert status to yellow alert.

This was announced by the Chief of Operations of the CNE, Sigifredo Pérez during the press conference, who pointed out that currently 23 cantons have an orange alert, 54 have a yellow alert throughout the country and 5 cantons share an orange alert and a yellow alert.

Early alerts for respiratory symptoms

Currently 75 districts in 33 cantons maintain the risk due to an increase in consultations for cough and fever, which increases the risk of facing an orange alert soon, since they are symptoms associated with COVID-19.

In this way, the cantons that are in an orange alert condition are:
