The Government of Costa Rica made the decision to vote in favor of the election of Mr. Mauricio Claver-Carone as the new President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), by virtue of the fact that Mr. Claver-Carone:

-He spoke by telephone with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rodolfo Solano, and with the Minister of Finance, Elian Villegas, Costa Rican governor before the IDB, to request national support;

-He promised to integrate into his work plan the proposals that Costa Rica promoted as the central axis of the candidacy of the former President of the Republic, Laura Chinchilla, which was always based on the promotion of key objectives for the strengthening of the work of this important entity for the benefit of all the countries of the region.

Today, President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Latin America, Mauricio Claver-Carone, became the first North American president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in an election that generated the consensus of most of the countries in the region and the resistance of a small group led by Argentina.

The election was held in a closed-door Bank Governors Assembly, with a secret ballot and – for the first time – virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. Claver-Carone obtained 30 votes in favor (more than 66%) and 16 countries abstained.

Although the vote is secret, it transpired that Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Nicaragua and some European countries made up that group. The North American will take office on October 1 and will lead the bank for the next 5 years.
