Removal of the body by relatives

The CCSS has guaranteed coverage for the timely assessment of the deceased covid-19 and that the family can withdraw it expeditiously, ideally in the first 24 hours with a maximum of 36 hours after death.

The way the network is organized makes it possible to optimize response times, as there are services that operate daily 24 hours a week and others from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are procedures that are applied in any health facility, be it a hospital, health area headquarters or in an ebáis.

At the time of death, internal coordination of the medical center is established to carry out administrative and communication tasks with the family, therefore it is important that the family members carry out the procedures as soon as possible.

In the CCSS every effort is made to accompany families in saying goodbye to their loved ones when they die “in our medical centers,” affirmed Dr. Vargas, but it also requires the responsibility of families to remove the bodies in a timely manner, which helps maintain free space in morgues.

In the same way, it recommends that people have their identification documents in order and authorized the people who, in such a situation, can make the corresponding decisions.

Treating the body with dignity and privacy

The process includes various aspects from the death to the delivery of the body to the family and the funeral home.

The deceased patient is treated with care, delicacy, with a dignified and humanitarian act, taking care of the health of the staff and his family, the pathologist indicated. “During the process, the body is managed by understanding that this person is a loved one of a family, the grandfather or grandmother, the father or mother, the son or daughter, the brother or the sister,” he commented.

He described that the body is prepared at the site of death, which includes thorough cleaning, disinfection and preparation to minimize the risk of infection. He is dressed taking care to leave his face clean and uncovered for later recognition.

The body is protected with two covers, an internal transparent one and an external dark one. The first isolates the body and allows recognition by the relative. The second colored bag protects the identity of the person and completes the security of an infectious risk for its transport and handling safely.

Then the body is transferred to the morgue with security and cleaning measures by the shortest route, where the least possible number of people circulate.

Knowledge can only be done by a family member who has a maximum of 15 minutes. During this period, they must keep at least one meter away, without touching the body or the coffin, and they must wear a mask.

Once the body is delivered to the family, the maximum burial time is less than 24 hours and it is impossible to open the coffin. You have two options, burial or cremation. The recommendation is that the body be transferred from the morgue to the cemetery or crematorium.

In case the relatives want to do a religious act, the specialists recommend that it be short without a body present and following all the prevention measures, that only people who belong to the same family unit participate. You can even take advantage of virtual participation.

Multidisciplinary approach

Covid-19 patients, from the start of care, are approached by multidisciplinary teams that involve professional and technical branches.

In this case, when the person dies, except in emergencies or in an ebáis, prior coordination with Social Work, Psychology, pathology, Medical Records, general services and related areas is carried out.

Likewise, the Single Digital Health Record (EDUS) has been fundamental since having this platform available throughout the health services network, facilitates access to information in real time to prepare the death certificate.
