The organization and logistics of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) to serve in a dignified manner the people who died from the covid-19 pandemic works at its maximum capacity, informed the medical manager, Dr. Mario Ruiz Cubillo.

Although all the efforts of the CCSS care services are aimed at giving covid-19 patients a chance to live, it is inevitable that a group of patients will become critical and die. For this Thursday, September 10, 567 accumulated covid-19 deaths are counted, of which 98 percent were treated in health establishments of the Caja.

The medical manager was emphatic that the CCSS is “a defender of life and respectful of death, it fights for life and understands death” and has always been on the side of families so that they have a virtual farewell, according to the possibilities and condition of the patient, with all the humanity required.

She added that “we understand that each person, according to their beliefs, deserves to live the moment of loss in a serene way and as an institution we must guarantee respect for this privacy.”

This entails an institutional commitment “to a comprehensive, dignified and multidisciplinary approach to the deceased covid-19 patient”, for which it has invested in supplies such as bags, contracting containers to increase the capacity of the morgues, and the training of personnel for the safe handling of the body under institutional protocols explained the hierarch.

From the moment the patient is diagnosed, a continuous approach and monitoring by medical, social work and other disciplines begins.

CCSS increased installed capacity of morgues

As part of the preparations to deal with the pandemic proactively and in advance, the institution decided to expand the installed capacity of its morgues through containers.

The CCSS has a network of pathology and morgue services, with a capacity of 134 spaces, in 28 medical centers (23 hospitals and five health areas).

Subsequently, gradually, the network has been reinforced with the installation of conditioned containers with a refrigerator, shelves, an access ramp and a floor made of a material that facilitates cleaning and disinfection.

The CEACO has a container with space for 25 deceased and in the San Juan de Dios hospital another with capacity for 24 bodies was located, both were installed with the support of the Solidarity Association of Employees of the CCSS (ASECCSS). One was placed at the Guápiles hospital for the temporary storage of 28 deceased with the support of the Corporación de Desarrollo Agrícola Del Monte S.A. The foregoing allowed increasing the institutional installed capacity of morgues by 63.5%, going from 134 spaces to 211.

As explained by Dr. Ruy Vargas, a pathologist at the San Vicente de Paul Hospital in Heredia, a morgue is a temporary storage site for corpses, which may or may not be located in a pathology service.

Starting next week, four containers will be installed in the Calderón Guardia, México, San Carlos and San Rafael de Alajuela hospitals respectively. At this moment it is in the process of being transferred from customs. The supplier began planning coordination for the installation, according to the a.i. Logistics Manager, Dr. Esteban Vega de la O.

In the same way, he informed that for the next week the first 500 additional bags of a purchase on demand will enter with a reference quantity of 3,000 bags, which are used for the safe handling of the bodies, which will be distributed in the different establishments in accordance with the behavior of the emergency.
