The National Forest Financing Fund (FONAFIFO) of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) and the Foundation for the Development of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range -FUNDECOR- signed an agreement this Thursday, which includes the promotion of a pilot plan in Sarapiquí to reforest between 200 and 500 hectares per year, between 2020 and 2027.
The project -whose execution begins with the signing of this agreement- includes the Payment for Environmental Services program and credit programs of FONAFIFO and other participating partners that are involved in the process, for the benefit of the development of the territories.
This visionary plan -designed by FUNDECOR and FONAFIFO’s Forestry Development Department- “is a pilot project to generate experiences that allow us to extrapolate them to other parts of the country and thereby contribute to the goal of reforesting 5,000 hectares per year nationwide. ”, Explained the general director of FONAFIFO, Jorge Mario Rodríguez.
With this program, producers will be able to access financing that allows them to conserve their land, covering the costs associated with the reforestation activity and generating profitability from the production process until the final harvest, promoting models that allow producer families to continue protecting their land with profitable and sustainable activities.
After participating as an essential witness to the signing of the agreement, the first vice president of the Republic and coordinator of the North Zone Development Strip, Epsy Campbell, highlighted the need for Costa Rica to make its schemes and instruments more flexible to protect the country’s natural capital and achieve the national goals of decarbonization of the economy.
“It is truly an honor to support a project as relevant as this one, where we can put into practice actions and learnings to reactivate the economy of the area and strengthen the forestry sector, but also generate more reforestation in Costa Rica, which will allow us continue to be a benchmark in the field worldwide, “said Campbell.
The Mayor of Sarapiquí, Pedro Rojas, stressed that “it is a true honor that FUNDECOR and FONAFIFO are initiating this important reforestation program in Sarapiquí, not only for the promotion of this activity, but also for the promotion of awareness and a culture of reforestation and conservation of forest cover ”.
“For us it is extremely valuable to be the spearhead of this project, fundamentally when considering the benefit and the opportunity that this will generate for producers to have greater employability. We are very happy with the signing of this agreement and this initiative in our canton ”, he concluded.
