The Rafael Ángel Calderón Guardia Hospital (HCG) acquired two buildable and interconnectable modules at a cost of one hundred and forty million colones for emergency and disaster care.

Mr. Alejandro Larios Enriquez, Coordinator of the Hospital Brigade indicated that these modules, once the national emergency due to COVID-19 is over, can be used to complement the CCSS Mobile Medical Unit for any type of emergency or disaster, where they will be able to attend patients in critical conditions.

These modules are the only ones with negative pressure, HEPA filters and Ultraviolet filters in Costa Rica. Larios Enríquez added that it has 2 buildable modules, one measuring 30 and the other measuring 52 square meters, with special adapted entrances and a lobby for officials.

The assembly and operation process is in charge of the Brigade of the Calderón Guardia Hospital, which has 25 members, 6 of whom have received all the training and have been involved in all the activities of the Mobile Medical Unit since 2016, including the attention to the emergency produced by Hurricane Otto, the deployment of verification of standards by the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO), high-impact campaigns to reduce waiting lists and the training of members of the regional teams.

These modules were acquired with specifications compatible with the institutional Mobile Medical Unit, so that, if the need arises for more space in the care of an emergency, they can be interconnected to expand the physical space and increase the complexity of the patients that can be addressed.

The purchase made at the local level had the endorsement of the Center for Attention to Emergencies and Disasters (CAED), always adhering to the institutional guidelines in this matter. The hospital authorities stated that this demonstrates the institutional commitment at all levels of management to have optimal equipment to provide health services with quality, safety and opportunity in an emergency.
