Mr. Walter Ferguson will represent Costa Rica worldwide on postage stamp.

As part of the commemoration of the Historical Month of Afro-descendants in Costa Rica, Correos de Costa Rica presents this Monday a commemorative postmark illustrated with the face of the renowned Costa Rican artist Wálter Ferguson.

The postmark features a line drawing of the father of the Costa Rican calypso, accompanied by a microphone representing his role as a composer and singer. The legend includes the reason for the issue: August Month of Afro-descendants, as well as the circulation date from August 31 to September 3.

The Vice President of the Republic Epsy Campbell highlighted the contribution to the Afro-Costa Rican musical culture of Ferguson, designated as a dedicated of honor in the commemorations of August.

“This year we decided to dedicate to Mr. Wálter Ferguson the commemoration of the Historical Month of Afro-descendants, for his immense contribution to the country, because his music has transcended borders and has inspired hundreds of national and international artists”, said Campbell, during the session of Governing Council this Monday, August 31 in Limón.

She explained that “Don Wálter composed more than one hundred calypsos in her entire life, although her music never sounded on the Costa Rican commercial radio. Today we recognize this musical genre as intangible cultural heritage and every May 7 as the National Day of the Costa Rican Calypso, thanks to the support of the Legislative Assembly for a project that I presented as a deputy in the previous period, ”she stated.

For his part, the president of the Board of Directors of Correos de Costa Rica, José Alexis Jiménez, commented that “this is a character whose legacy has transcended borders, has marked a before and after in the cultural identity of our country. Through his talent, Don Wálter has immortalized the reality of the Afro-Costa Rican population and has shown the world the value of their traditions. That is why it fills us with pride that it is part of the philatelic history of our country ”.

This postmark is available at the Philatelic Window located in the Central Post Office Building in San José.
