Cuido de Mi Salud is a CEN-CINAI program that allows the sharing of tasks and strategies that give continuity to the activities to promote health habits that were carried out in the center and have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing in : hygiene habits (hand washing, cough and sneeze protocol), oral health, physical activity and movement to strengthen mental health.
Five months ago, the CEN-CINAI National Directorate implemented the CEN-CINAI at Home strategy, an inclusive model with a public health approach, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacts almost 39,000 users with services to the house.
With Cuido de Mi Salud a toothbrush, a tube of toothpaste, and educational materials were provided. This component is developed through digital sessions, individual telephone or digital attention with health education sessions.
Since its inception, the National Directorate of CEN-CINAI has ensured preventive oral health care for children.
Proof of this is that for the year 2019, 77,819 bacterial plaque controls were carried out in boys and girls who receive the Child Care and Protection service at the CEN-CINAI, a dental caries preventive procedure that is performed four times a year at boys and girls over 3 years old.
Optimal equipment was acquired for the evaluation of oral health in boys and girls: 210 toothbrushes with capacity for 30 brushes, with Ultraviolet LED light, which eliminates 99.9% of the bacteria present in the toothbrushes of boys and girls, to avoid contamination, promote cleanliness and asepsis in the daily tooth brushing activity carried out in the country’s establishments.
In its daily activities CEN-CINAI promotes the prevention of dental caries through modern preventive techniques; despite the fact that this year due to the appearance of the pandemic, this activity had to be suspended; the previous year, 41,549 boys and girls across the country had fluoride varnish applied. Fluoride varnish has been used in developed countries with excellent results in reducing the incidence of dental caries in institutional programs in preschool and school children.
“In oral health, at the regional level, we are the only country with a comprehensive preventive program at the preschool and school level, which includes: brushing, control of bacterial plaque, application of fluoride varnish and reference and counter-reference system to the CCSS, which guarantees good oral health in our children ”, argued Dr. Grettel Molina Carvajal, dentist, in charge of Oral Health at CEN-CINAI.
In turn, CEN-CINAI carries out toothbrush replacement every three months in accordance with the recommendations of the American Dental Association and national and international entities, such as WHO / PAHO.
All these initiatives have allowed the children of CEN-CINAI to brush their teeth after each meal either in the centers or at home, lowering the levels of bacterial plaque in their mouths and improving their oral health, their state of health and nutrition.
