The Board of Directors of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) approved, on Thursday night, the plan that traces the route for the expansion of the covid units in hospitals in the institutional network, as well as the preparation of the East Tower of the Calderón Guard against the possible need to use it as a center for covid-19 patients.

The executive president of the CCSS, Dr. Román Macaya, confirmed that the highest body gave the green light to the strategy that will expand the response capacity of the CCSS to the growth of cases of covid-19 patients across the country.

“The institution has been working since the beginning of the pandemic to address the increase in people who demand hospitalization, whether in the classroom, intermediate or critical care, and with this decision the actions to be followed in the coming days and weeks are defined,” he explained.

The executive president said that this situation due to the covid-19 requires permanent monitoring to assess the adjustments in the hospital network, as well as the provision of equipment, human resources and personal protection supplies that guarantee the maximum amount of care that can be offered to new patients.

“The CCSS networking is a strength that today more than ever we must promote so that as a single Fund, we can meet the demand for services by COVID-19 and guarantee the continuity of services for non-COVID diseases.”

The hierarchy was emphatic that no hospital expansion will be sufficient to respond to Covid, if citizens do not assume their responsibility to comply with public health recommendations, to achieve a decrease in the rate of increase in cases.

For his part, Dr. Mario Ruiz Cubillo, medical manager of the CCSS, explained that the approved plan is called Expansion and demarcates the reconversion in phase II of spaces in national hospitals so that there can be more lounge beds, as well as units intermediate and intensive care to meet the need as a result of the emergency facing the country.

“The response to the pandemic has been planned in stages. This plan contains the tasks that will be implemented gradually as the demands for hospital care and critical care increase. At this moment we are about to exhaust the first stage, which is the response with ordinary capacity, and we are already working to enter phase two, called expanded capacity in national hospitals, “said Ruiz.

The doctor explained that CEACO was the right response at the time we were in the pandemic stage of transmission by conglomerates or clusters and that this was an essential resource in this fight against covid because “it allowed to attend cases in an exclusive place and thus reduce the risk of infection in other hospitals, so that they could continue treating other pathologies and also made more efficient use of human, financial and protective equipment. ”

Thus, the San Juan de Dios, Calderón Guardia and México hospitals will give way to a growth in their units for covid care through the reconversion of beds in the lounge and the provision of new spaces for the ICU.

For example, San Juan de Dios, which currently has 7 ICU beds for covid and 30 moderate care, has 9 ICU beds and 12 moderate beds. They will do this by converting rooms they currently have.

In the Mexico hospital where there are currently 12 ICU beds and 22 moderately managed beds, 10 ICU beds and 30 moderate care beds will be added.

Finally, in this stage II, the Calderón Guardia will add up to 24 ICU beds and 15 moderately managed beds.

With this, the CCSS will obtain in this expansion phase an additional capacity of 43 new ICU beds and 57 moderately managed beds.

Phase III of this plan is called extraordinary capacity. Here the San Juan de Dios would add up to 18 more ICU beds, the Mexico 10 ICUs and 15 moderate ones, and the Calderón Guardia would add 64 ICU beds.
