Dr. Mario Ruiz Cubillo, medical manager of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), communicated the good news of the negative result of two covid-19 control tests carried out on the premature baby born 10 days ago in the Liberian hospital.

The minor had been transferred via area the previous Tuesday to the National Children’s Hospital (HNN) due to his premature condition, the manager reported.

The neonate was first tested for covid-19 on suspicion five days after the treating physician, a pediatric specialist, was positive for SARS-CoV-2 during a screening that was performed days later in the hospital.

For its part, the director of the HNN, Dr. Olga Arguedas Arguedas, explained that the specialists of this medical center in the assessment of the first day of arrival of the patient determined the need to carry out more control tests to clarify the case.

The above when considering various elements, among them, it was confirmed that the contacts of the treating physician with the baby were made using the appropriate personal protective equipment, the clinical symptoms were not clear for covid-19 and its condition of prematurity (27 weeks ).

The second sample was taken last Tuesday and the third sample was made 24 hours later. Both were analyzed in the CCSS and by the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (Incense), with the same negative result.

The PCR test is highly sensitive and is recommended by international organizations, however, it is important to note that there is a percentage probability that false positive and false negative results will occur, hence the importance of medical judgment to carry out more tests.

Dr. Olga Arguedas Arguedas, indicated that after being certain of the results of control tests, they communicated it to the family.

Another good news is that this week another three-month-old patient was discharged, who was also being followed up by covid-19 by the National Children’s Hospital.
