In the face of the national emergency caused by the COVID-19 coronavirus, the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) was integrated into 3D printing of plastic parts for the production of safety masks for health personnel of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) .
The initiative is led by the Laboratory of Observation of the Climate System of the University of Costa Rica (LOSIC-UCR). The parts are printed by the IMN and the assembly process is developed by LOSIC. At the moment, it has allowed the preparation in an initial stage of some 40 pieces of plastic, of which 32 were destined for the La Anexión Hospital in Nicoya and the remaining 8 for other health centers.
“It has been an excellent cooperation between both institutions to contribute to the needs of the CCSS,” said Werner Stolz, director general of the IMN, a dependency of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE).
He added that the institution will continue to support as long as they are supplied with the raw material for printing. “The staff of the institution is very pleased to be an active part of this initiative and thus collaborate with the country in the national emergency,” said Stolz.
In total, the university laboratory has prepared more than 1,400 3D prints for face shields for health personnel who directly attend the emergency.
Marcial Garbanzo, director of the university laboratory, explained that “part of the manufacturing was distributed directly to CCSS hospitals that expressed the immediate need for equipment. Another part was delivered to the Faculty of Engineering of the UCR, which has sent the Fund by other means ”.
He added that thanks to the support of the IMN, 32 3D prints were provided to the hospital in Nicoya, “where they expressed great satisfaction with the equipment and have used it at different points needed for patient care,” he concluded.
For his part, Dr. Anner Angulo, general director of La Anexión hospital, indicated that in the midst of this pandemic that the country is facing, “solidarity and joint work between institutions are key to success. We are very grateful to the face shields donated by the National Meteorological Institute and that we are already using in the Emergency service, ”he said.
