Works resumed at the Sixaola Binational Bridge

Work on the Binational Bridge between Costa Rica and Panama over the Sixaola river was resumed this Monday, after the suspension ordered by the Panamanian government on March 26, due to the health emergency by COVID-19.

The Minister of Public Works and Transport, Rodolfo Méndez Mata, stressed the importance of being able to continue with the work that is currently 78% complete and whose work is now concentrated on the Panama side.

The structural slab of the first three bays, located on Costa Rican soil, is complete. In the third week of April, the beams of span 4 will be launched, located mainly in Panamanian territory. The last span (5) is found, in its entirety, in Panamanian territory.

For his part, Alejandro Rossi, director of UNOPS in Costa Rica, explained that as a result of the efforts of the Ministry of Public Works of Panama and UNOPS, authorization was obtained from the Ministry of Health of Panama, to continue with the works of this strategic project starting next Monday, April 13.

“In the project, strict prevention and protection measures will continue to be applied to each and every worker on the site, for which purpose UNOPS has instructed the construction company to apply the corresponding measures indicated in the guide” COVID-19: Measures of prevention in works “, produced by PAHO / WHO and UNOPS,” said Rossi.

The project is managed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and its construction is in charge of the Sixaola Binational Consortium, made up of the company Meco S.A. from Costa Rica, Cal & Mayor y Asociados and Mexpresa, both Mexican. It has an investment of $ 25 million, of which $ 10 million comes from a non-reimbursable item from the Infrastructure Fund for Mesoamerican and Caribbean countries (50% for Costa Rica and 50% for Panama), with an additional counterpart of $ 7.5 million per country.

As estimated, the new bridge will enter service in the third quarter of this 2020.
