The Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) and the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) decided to extend until April 30, the closure and suspension of activities in all National Parks and Protected Wild Areas (ASP) with spaces for public use , with the aim of mitigating the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19 and protecting citizens.

When giving the information, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Pamela Castillo, recalled that on March 20, the closure of these tourist centers was reported until April 13, subject to reconsideration and provisions of the Ministry of Health.

“The closure will remain in force due to the expansion by the authorities to avoid crowds. As long as MINAE does not have any instructions to the contrary, the ASPs will remain closed for the provision of ecotourism services. It is a measure that we will maintain as long as necessary, taking the health of all citizens as a priority, “said the hierarch.

For her part, Grettel Vega, executive director of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), indicated that, while Costa Rican citizens comply with the isolation, park rangers continue to guard the 144 Protected Wild Areas administered by SINAC, complying with the recommendations from health authorities to prevent them from being affected by the virus.

“There are more than 400 park rangers – men and women – who strictly comply with the instructions given by the Environmental Administration, to protect our natural heritage, helping the Ministry of Health to prevent tourists from entering our ASPs,” said the director.

MINAE authorities recalled that people who have canceled entry to a national park, have purchased tickets or made reservations online through dealers and third parties, may reschedule their visits, to the emails listed below:

The aforementioned emails can be consulted on SINAC’s social networks, as well as the procedure to follow.

SINAC also published through its social networks the contacts to carry out online procedures and telephone or digital queries to the Executive Secretariat and to the 11 Conservation Areas. This measure is applied with the objective of contributing to the efforts to promote social isolation among officials and users of the Institution.

Finally, it is reiterated that currently the online reservation system and the ticketing platform for the National Parks are not operating, in which the aforementioned options are provided.
