Costa Rica Receives Donation of Personal Protective Equipment from the United States Embassy

The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) received, on Friday afternoon, a donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) from the diplomatic representation of the United States of America in our country.

As explained by Dr. Román Macaya Hayes, executive president of the CCSS, the inputs received will be used by workers who are in direct care of the health emergency caused by COVID-19.

“Today we are receiving gloves and isolation gowns for the protection of our workers who are on the front line of containment and attention to this pandemic. They are caring for patients who come with flu symptoms and many of these cases can be positive, so we have to try to do everything possible to guarantee the safety of our health workers and this donation that we receive today helps us. in supplying these materials to our workers, ”said Dr. Macaya.

“We thank the Ambassador for the donations that she sent to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, with teams that will be very important for the attention of COVID-19 in our country, I am sure that we will move forward together and together,” said the president of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado.

For her part, the US Ambassador to Costa Rica, Sharon Day said: “I am proud that the United States government can help Costa Rica, especially the brave men and women of Costa Rica’s medical services, by face this global pandemic of COVID-19 together. We are with Costa Rica, be it fighting drug trafficking, expanding the learning of the English language or fighting against COVID-19 ».

Today’s delivery is the first of two donations to be made by the United States Embassy in our country through the Southern Command Humanitarian Assistance Program (SOUTHCOM).

Regarding this donation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Rodolfo Solano Quirós, declared: “The global challenge that all countries face as a result of COVID-19 requires that we multiply efforts. This solidarity response from the United States is a gesture that the country appreciates. ”

Personal protective equipment, purchased from local suppliers in Costa Rica, consists of surgical masks, isolation gowns, surgical gloves, goggles, and N-95 medical masks. The equipment is valued at $ 75,000.

Today’s donation consists of nine pallets containing:

  • 9,700 isolation gowns.
  • 57,000 sets of surgical gloves.

In the next two weeks, once supplies become available in Costa Rica, the second donation will consist of:

  • 20,700 surgical masks.
  • 4 150 N-95 type masks.
  • 2 250 sets of protective glasses.

Dr. Macaya Hayes thanked Ambassador Sharon Day, Colonel Juan Mata, senior defense officer, the United States diplomatic headquarters team, and Admiral Craig Faller, commander of the United States Southern Command for this donation, and highlighted the “record time” in which it was made in response to the request for logistical and material support raised by the CCSS.
