The Government of the Republic today announced stronger sanitary measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the country. In that line it was instructed:

  • Total closure of beaches throughout the country.
  • Mandatory closure of temples and religious cults.
  • In the framework of the emergency, a sanitary vehicle restriction of 10p.m. at 5a.m. Starting this Tuesday, March 24, the details of who this restriction covers and the exceptions contemplated will be made public tomorrow. Those who do not comply with the restriction are exposed to the traffic fine of ₡ 22,187.93. colones.
  • As of tomorrow, all foreigners residing or with regular status in the country who leave the national territory, automatically lose their immigration status.

“We reiterate that the government is doing everything possible to protect us, especially the most vulnerable populations, but there is an inescapable responsibility for people, we need each of you to continue doing your part. All at home, but older adults with much more reason at home, as far as possible without visits, only those necessary to supply them.

And, along these lines, in general we should try not to visit each other, not to have family gatherings and that technology allows us to communicate, “emphasized the Minister of Health, Daniel Salas.

“We are at a peak moment to reduce the impact of contagion in the country. Let us abide by the instructions of the health authorities and be responsible as citizens, help those who need it most and do not expose vulnerable people, “said the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado.

As of today, 158 positive cases for COVID-19 are registered, with an age range between 2 to 87 years. There are 68 women and 90 men, of whom 141 are Costa Rican and 17 foreigners.

Positive cases are registered in 30 cantons of seven provinces. By age there are: 135 adults, 16 older adults and 7 minors.

Today, the Minister of Health appealed to the young adult population and the adult population between 25 and 55 years, which groups more than 70% of the cases. Although these age groups could face the disease without hospitalization or complications, they must remember the responsibility that covers us all, social distancing and hygiene measures, avoiding at all costs the possible transmission to older adults.

Seven people are hospitalized, three of them in intensive care.
