The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) decided, as a measure of prevention and protection against emergencies by COVID-19, to suspend, as of this Thursday, all the clinical fields of undergraduate and graduate university rotary internships in their hospitals.

Dr. Roberto Cervantes Barrantes, general manager of the CCSS, explained that this measure seeks to protect students and at the same time mitigate the risks of transmission of the COVID-19 virus in the CCSS and in the population. “We have communicated this provision to the universities whenever the country is facing an emergency and it is the responsibility of the CCSS and of all, to execute the necessary actions to reduce the possibility of contagion.”

For his part, Dr. Juan Carlos Esquivel Sánchez, director of the Center for Strategic Development and Information on Health and Social Security (CENDEISSS), said that days ago the undergraduate clinical fields had already been canceled and that with this new communication, all of the fields in the institution.

“There are about 800 students who were currently in rotation at the Caja’s medical centers, in various medical, pharmacy and microbiology services,” said Esquivel.

The university inmates who rotate in the CCSS centers are students of the teaching houses and not officials of the institution, so the Fund does not foresee an affectation in the services to the population with the temporary suspension of these spaces. The measure will apply until further notice as deemed appropriate by the CCSS authorities.
