In order to generate a working table in the telecommunications area to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications (MICITT) in its capacity as rector, called this Industry, with the support of The Telecommunications Superintendency (SUTEL) in its capacity as regulator, at a meeting on Monday, March 16, to establish actions aimed at providing continuity, maintenance and security of services, as well as identifying initiatives that the Sector supports the country’s efforts to face this health emergency.
In addition to the MICITT authorities, the Sutel Council, and representatives of the Chamber of Infocommunication and Technology (Infocom), the companies Claro, Telefónica, Telecable, Cabletica, Tigo-Millicom and the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity participated in this meeting. (ICE).
As a result of this meeting, the following agreements were reached:
- Systematize the massive sending of text messages with health recommendations issued by the Ministry of Health to all clients.
- Keep calls to the hotline 1322 free of charge.
- Free browsing on the websites of the Ministry of Education (MEP), the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), the Ministry of Health (MS), Presidency of the Republic and Pura Vida Digital.
- The creation of a high-level work table for the duration of the emergency, in order to monitor, attend to and ensure the continuity of services in a timely manner, according to the patterns of use and demand by customers.
- Companies undertake to make every effort to supply the required demand.
The operators stated that they made every effort to increase the services they offer and called on all users to make efficient use of them.
As has been done in other countries, telecommunications operators called for:
- Make a safe and responsible use of the Internet during teleworking hours, such as: access to email, use of platforms that require work, communication applications, among others.
- Avoid, as far as possible: unnecessary downloads, mass mailings, mails with “heavy” files.
Finally, a call is made to join the global initiatives and recommendations of the Ministry of Health, to confront COVID-19 with the support of technology and telecommunications, making responsible and rational use of networks, to have efficient communication, safe and quality.
