National Symphony Orchestra will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary in the Official 2020 Season

The National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica (OSN), will make a total of 22 presentations at the National Theater as part of the Official Season 2020, which will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest musical composers in history: Ludwig Van Beethoven.

In total there will be eight double and two triple concerts from February to November (full calendar attached), where 21 invited soloists will participate, of which eight will be Costa Rican musicians who play different instruments.

Among the invited artists are the names of the renowned American violinist Rachel Barton Pine, the Ukrainian pianist Alexander Romanovsky, the young American violinist Aubree Oliverson, the Chinese pianist Fei Fei and the Costa Ricans José Aurelio Castillo (violin), Ruth Garita (harp), Jorge Rodríguez Herrera (oboe) and José Arturo Chacón (baritone), among some.  

Six of the ten scheduled concerts will be under the direction of the Principal Director Carl St. Clair, while the other presentations will feature the invited Directors: Carlos Spierer (Sweden), Sylvain Gazancon (France), John Nelson (Costa Rican-American) and Arthur Fagen (American).

With great enthusiasm we are waiting for the start of the 80th anniversary season of the National Symphony Orchestra. We will start with a great concert where five soloists from the OSN will perform. We will also celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary with his music throughout the year. For the VI Season Concert, pianist Alexander Romanovsky will return to the country, who will perform the five piano concerts on two dates”, said OSN Head Director Carl St. Clair.

Beethoven’s music & Costa Rican plays

In addition to Beethoven’s piano concerts, this composer will also play Symphony No. 1 (May), Christ on the Mount of Olives (May), the Violin Concerto (August), Choral Fantasy (October) and Symphony No. 9 “Coral”, the latter for the concert in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the OSN on November 26, 27 and 29.

Other notable works that will be played during this season are Don Quixote by Richard Strauss (February), the Opening of the Marriage of Figaro by WA Mozart (April), Harp Concerto by Reinhold Gliere (June), Suite No. 2 for orchestra Dafnis and Cloe by Maurice Ravel (August), the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Franz Liszt (September), as well as the Costa Rican works Rapsodia Aérea by Andrés Soto, Fantasía Sinfónica de Julio Fonseca and one more piece to be announced.

Concerts with the National Symphonic Choir

The OSN and the National Symphonic Choir will share the stage in three concerts during the Official 2020 Season (eight dates), to present pieces of Beethoven, Mozart and Fauré to the public.

The National Symphonic Choir will participate with three works by composer Ludwig van Beethoven in the celebration of the 250th anniversary of his birth. The Christ oratory on the Mount of Olives, the Coral Fantasy and the Ninth Symphony. In addition, we will be presenting the Requiem de Fauré. We invite all singers interested in participating during this season in the auditions to be able to be part of the choir, which we will perform in the month of February”, said Marcela Lizano, Director of the National Symphonic Choir.

In the next few days the National Music Center will announce the date of sale of tickets for this season, which will be done through the ticket office and website of the National Theater. The costs will be between 7 and 24 thousand colones, depending on the location and discounts of 40% will apply for gold citizens and students.
