San José, February 11, 2020. Learn about the “National Campaign of 1856-1857” against the filibusters, or about the history of the old Barracks of Alajuela or visit and get to know the room “Manuela Santamaría”, which preserves a series of wall paintings executed in 1957 by the local artist: Antonio Ugalde Álvarez, during the time when the building housed the city’s police forces, in a different and entertaining way, through educational guided tours that, free of charge, offers the Juan Santamaría Cultural Historical Museum (MHCJS).

And it is that precisely the institutional theme of the MHCJS, the “National Campaign of 1856-1857”, is part of the thematic contents of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), at all educational levels, which is why taking the children and young people, to these activities can become a useful pedagogical tool to teach about history in a different way.

Through these visits the Museum aims to become a learning tool and our intention is to train critical thinking in minors and teach them that a Museum goes beyond being a place where old objects or old things are stored, it is watching how that past influences our current life and in which way we can build and think from these historical facts and how that affects me and how the peace that all Costa Ricans enjoy today was built based on a war that marked us and It gave a sense of identity, belonging and Nation”, said MHCJS director María Elena Masís.

Guided tours are taught by qualified MHCJS staff members and volunteers:

This pedagogical accompaniment service is offered by qualified MHCJS officials, accompanied by volunteers and university students from different disciplines such as: education, tourism, history, international relations, languages, visual arts, among others. This diversity of career paths will offer users of this service, a wide range of analytical approaches, in relation to the events of 1856-1857; background, national and international context, meanings and artistic representations, among other related topics.

Guided tours will be offered from Wednesday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. at 12:00 noon, in the Museum facilities, located in front of the north side of the Alajuela Central Park. Our Museum has a very strong educational vocation and all the activities that are carried out focus on the issue of educating through a different learning system such as this guided tour we offer.
