The National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica (OSN), reaches its 80 years of trajectory in 2020, and will celebrate it, along with all the citizenry, with more than 90 performances throughout the national territory.
The presentations, which in 60 per cent of cases will be available free of charge, will be offered in different public spaces and educational centres throughout the country, through national tours and cultural outreach presentations, which will begin in February.
The group is scheduled to visit the provinces of Guanacaste, Limón, Puntarenas, as well as the southern zone, where at least 15 free concerts will be held. In addition, a series of presentations were planned in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) to celebrate the 80th anniversary on 31 October 2020.
The 2020 Season of the National Symphony Orchestra will be very special because we celebrate the 80th anniversary, remaining one of the oldest orchestras in Latin America. This year we are going to perform more than 90 concerts across the country; a number of performances that exceed what has been done in recent years, said Gabriel Goñi, general director of the National Music Center (CNM)Ministry of Culture and Youth, to which the OSN belongs.
Another remarkable detail is the realization of at least three tours in rural areas of the country, where the orchestra can be enjoyed free of charge in communities, schools and colleges of Guanacaste, Puntarenas, Limon and the south of, the director added.
The first concerts of the OSN for this year, will be together with the group Los Tenores with the show José José Vive, which will be held on February 13 and 14, at the Teatro Popular Melico Salazar. Later, two Lyric Nights will be held in venues to be defined and on February 28 the Official Season 2020 will begin at the National Theatre of Costa Rica, together with the titular director of the OSN, Carl St. Clair. The invited artists, dates of presentations, ticket prices, among other information about the Official Season 2020 of the OSN, will be revealed to the public next January 14.

Special Season of Concerts. As for the Special Season 2020, we highlight the tribute to the music of the singer José José, a concert dedicated to zarzuela, tango presentation and special concerts with the sections of bronzes, percussion and strings, among others.

For the second semester of the year will be held teaching concerts in schools, tour to Limon, 80th anniversary activities in October, cultural outreach presentations and traditional Christmas concerts in December with the National Symphonic Choir.
Costa Rican artists. In total approximately 95 concerts will be performed, of which at least 55 will be free. These presentations will include the participation of the invited Costa Rican directors: Alejandro Gutiérrez, Gabriela Mora, Eddie Mora and Ramiro A. Ramírez, as well as soloists of different instruments and lyrical singers to be announced, as well as musical programs.
During 2019, the OSN held 77 concerts throughout the country, of which 42 were free and a total of 26 were held in educational establishments, surpassing the goals set at the beginning of the year.
In 2019, communities such as Garabito de Puntarenas, Corralillo de Nicoya, Los Chiles de Alajuela and Guararí de Heredia were visited for the first time. More than 36,000 people attended the orchestra’s activities.
