Costa Rican Percussionists to Perform in Puebla Mexico

An event that celebrates women and their work in the field of fine arts and also exalts their participation in cultural life, will be held from 19 to 27 November, in Veracruz and Puebla, Mexico.

This is the Interdisciplinary Forum of Women Artists 2019 (FIMA), in which MUENPE will participate, an ensemble made up of Daniela Barboza (22 years old), Daniela Contreras (18 years old), Celia Martínez (27 years old) and Fiorella Aguilar (24 years old)university-level students of music and percussion from the National Institute of Music (INM) and the National University (UNA).

The ensemble will be directed by the Master in Music Carmen Alfaro Méndez. These concerts are very interesting because we have the option to present to the public mostly Costa Rican music. Which are also premieres. In addition, it is important to rescue that percussion has historically been considered an exclusive instrument of the male genre; although it is true that this has been changing, To be able to carry out this initiative is a way of realizing and promoting gender equity. We hope that girls and women interested in percussion will be motivated by this project and venture to play, said Alfaro.

MUENPE will present two concerts, one at the Universidad Veracruzana and the second in the auditorium of the Instituto Superior de Música del Estado de Veracruz. With a repertoire of Costa Rican and French composers, as well as a piece for the collective creation of the assembly. In addition, two master classes in percussion and popular Costa Rican music will be taught.

The participation of this Costa Rican group in Mexico was achieved thanks to an invitation of the FIMA for the National Institute of Music. Last October MUENPE participated in the International Percussion Festival in Puerto Rico.

The group will give a farewell presentation on Monday, November 18, at 6 p.m., in the lobby of the building of the National Music Center.
