On November 19, 2005, the first International Storytelling Festival “Alajuela City Word Words.” Was inaugurated, in which representatives of Colombia, Spain, Cameroon, Honduras, and, of course, the most outstanding artists of oral expression in Costa Rica.
This festival, which has been in its 14 editions. Has become an artistic-cultural meeting that brings together. The best national and international storytellers and has become a tradition that is full of joy, art and stories to local and surrounding citizens. In addition, it promotes a hotbed of artists, through a continuous process of training in oral storytelling, which stimulates the love of storytelling, play, reading and the value of oral tradition. Involving children, that today are consolidated as great promises of the oral narration of the country.
Precisely, the joy, the feast and the culture promoted by “Alajuela City Word Words”. Was officially established by Executive Decree 42001-C, published in the Official Journal La Gaceta of November 6, 2019, in which November 19 of each year is proposed. as the day of the celebration of “Alajuela City Word”, Which will allow the realization of cultural activities in the province of Alajuela, celebrating the oral narration and counting.
This decree, signed by Carlos Alvarado, President of the Republic, and Sylvie Durán, Minister of Culture and Youth, also aims to highlight Alajuela’s pride in the value given to oral tradition and, In addition, ensure that future generations meet a province that appreciates word, face-to-face communication and literature.
Juan Madrigal, director and founder of Alajuela Ciudad Palabra, said that This decree signifies an official endorsement of the work with excellence that a group of Alajuela dreamers, we have done in favor of maintaining, for future generations, the intangible heritage of oral tradition.
Alajuela Ciudad Palabra is a civil organization that is currently working to become a cultural association. Since 2005, it has been working to promote the development of storytelling in the country as a way of rescuing the intangible cultural heritage and creating spaces for community gatherings.
The main activity organized by this group is the International Counting Festival, the most important storytelling festival in Costa Rica and Central America, which will soon hold its fifteenth edition. In addition, throughout the year, they carry out other activities such as storytelling workshops, stories in communities, the National Storytelling Show, picnic stories, tour of Alajuela, fairytale nights, among other activities.
