Another year the Light Festival is going to fill the streets of San José with light, music and unique floats to welcome Christmas with much joy.

The tradition of Light Festival began in 1996 when the council of San José organised the first parade of floats and best music bands of the country. That year 16 floats and 12 music bands marched through the city.

This year 10 floats and 13 music bands will parade during the Festival, which will begin with the float that won the prize of most shiny float last year, the float of the Children’s Museum.

The figure of Mariscal was born in 1999 as a central element of the Light Festival. The Mariscal is a Costa Rican person recognised by the Council of San José as an important figure who has given pride and importance to Costa Rica, both at the national and at the international level.

This year 3 exemplary women have been appointed as the Mariscals of the 2019 Light Festival: the athletes Andrea y Noelia Vargas and their mother and coach Dixiana Mena.
It is important to highlight the fact that out of all mariscals throughout the years, 10 of them have been athletes.

Floats’ order of appearance this year:

  1. Children’s Museum (2018 winner)
  2. Kölbi
  3. National Institute of Insurance (INS)
  4. Costa Rican Institute of Tourism (ICT)
  5. Huawei
  6. San José City Council
  7. Coopenae
  8. Autonomous University of Central America (UACA)
  9. Demasa
  10. Bank of Costa Rica (BCR)

We invite you to join this free activity open to all, this Saturday 14th December from 6pm. This magical parade will start at the National Gymnasium, it will pass through Paseo Colón and 2nd Avenue and it will end at the Democracy Square.
