[:en]The 7th and now Annual Blues Festival of Costa Rica was (once again) a complete success. This year the Blues came back to Guanacaste, more specifically to Playa Potrero in the always amazing Sailing Center. The expectancy for this year’s Festival was high. 2017 Fest blew everyone away. So this year there was a palpable feeling of anxiety to let the string ring and harmonicas play. Luckily the list of artist was equally impressive.

Eight bands six of which were international headliners took the stage on Saturday 10th. However the blues began earlier. With a meet and great in the Beautiful Flaming resort of Friday. That included a quick preview of what the Saturday was to unload on us. So issues with the sound system (Murphy’s Law) didn’t stop the blues. And a impro band took the stage. Cause the band that was due to play first encounter a truck flipped over sideways which created a miles long traffic jam and then had to deal with some car issues. We believed the car got traumatised after seeing the truck sideways. (quick reminder don’t rush take it easy and don’t flip trucks)

But anyway Blues is famous for his flexibility and improvisational qualities. Once the band took the stage the open air restaurant became a Ballroom. The licks stated flowing, the wahwah started scream the bass set the rhythm and the drums enchanted the bodies of the people present. Until the headliners took the stage for a quick appetiser for Saturday’s night. Annika Chambers’s band delighted the people present. The kids were loving it!

On Saturday morning the stage was ready and the backline was receiving the last checks. For what was going to be 12 hours of music. The doors opened at 10:30 as expected! At 11:30 Andy Egert hit the stage. Andy a guitarist and singer from Switzerland had the difficult task to open the venue. The people present were immediately blown away. Andy will return regularly to the stage invited for the other band playing to either play guitar or harmonica. After Andy the Jake Levinson Band took the stage. With a feeling of ragtime and jazz the band hype the vibes even more. The people at the sailing center were enjoying of the sun, the grass the pool and the blues. At the entrance the worked never stopped. Constant waves of eagerly blues fans kept coming.

Blues in front, sea at the right and from the left an incredible appealing smell of grilled hamburgers and sausages. The beer was drink as much as waves splashed just meters away. Everybody was having an amazingly good time. It was time for Donnie Walsh and the Leatherbacks to hit the stage.  Donnie who featured in the Blues Brothers movie now lives full time in Costa Rica. And the leatherbacks is a legendary Costa Rican band compose of both ticos and expats. For sure one of the most anticipated bands to hit the stage.

Then another Costa Rican band took the spotlight. The Neotics brought Funk and Soul the hears and souls of the people present. Several extraordinary executed covers let the name of the Costa Rica musicians well represented. Meanwhile at the door smiley faces of new people kept appearing. Coming one after another to enjoy the remaining 6 hours of music.

The organise and our good friend Smoking Mo was received by the viewers with a powerful ovations. It was time for the Blues Devils to play. Mo is a consummated harmonica player and an excellent singer too. Somehow he managed to organise the event and also play on it. In front of a Packed Sailing Center the Blues Devils exhibited and amazing dexterity and quality in the interpretation. While everybody else kept seeing Mo as if to say. KEEP THE BLUES COMING EVERY YEAR!

The people from “Abriendo Mentes” a non profit organisation helped in several places. Remember that the Interntational Costa Rica Blues Festival is also a charity event. “Abriendo Mentes” take care of children in Playa Potrero and Brasilito. Teaching them English and computer and other well needed abilities to face the challenges the world present now a days.  Raffle tickets buy the assistant will proved very useful for the volunteers and the people and kids from Playa Potrero and Brasilito.

The daylight started to dim. While an amazing sunset started to appear at the horizon. Many people share their attention between the stage and the skyline. We meanwhile took a quick swim in the ocean and the hurry for our camera to capture this amazing sunset.

The great Craig Thatcher and Sparky Parker helped the sun to set. But also with the night they brought and mastery in the execution. Perhaps the only thing more amazing than their performances was to see people still dancing in front of the stage. With the night the party mood enter the Sailing Center.  It is always amazing to see people smiling and having and good time. And guest what people kept coming. The venue was never anything less than full. We have to shut out the amazing people working tirelessly for this event. People who worked for more than 12 consecutive hours. And of course and equally big thanks to the assistants. For making the Blues Festival possible and the job of the people involved so easy. Been so cordials and educated.

And the it was Annika’s turn. We who had seen the band the night before knew what her voice was capable off. Even the other musicians were expecting here to hit the stage. The headliners displayed an outstanding control of their instruments and the stage. People whom we have saw since the beginning of the day were still dancing and jumping at the rythm and blues set by Annika and her band. Sax, guitar, drums and keyboards and the extremely powerful voice of Annika recharge the batteries of all the people present with their first chord.

People didn’t seam willing to let them march of the stage. Annika’s band throw everything the had covers, originals and shuffles. However the hour to stop the music was creeping near by. While looking at the faces of the people around you could only see happiness and fulfilment. While looking and the people involved in the Blues Festival you get a sense of accomplishment. The last note was play. And with that the Blues Festival 2018 had been a complete success.
