One of those villages is called Palmares. A place with a moto as “The Town to make friends”. Its name comes from the large amount of Palma Real present in the region, in fact in the Pre-Columbian era it was known as Valley of Palma.
During the pre-Columbian time, it was an Indigenous Territory which was occupied by the Huetar People. And lead by a famous shaman call Cacique Garabito. Huetar people were (and are) characterised by their multiple art expressions. Like ceramic vessels, stone tables and anthropomorphic figures.
Regulary Palmares is a calmed and small town. But once a year… It throws one of the biggest and highly anticipated celebrations. “Las Fiestas de Palmares”. As part of the holidays season. Keeping true to Costa Rican spirit of not letting party stops. This festival takes place on the first 2 weeks of January.
The festival has it all. Concerts, stand-up comedy, a carnival, sporting events, fireworks, bullfighting, food and drinks, and even it has its own “Tope” or Horse Parade. It’s a event for all people and entire family which are invited to have the time of their life.
The event is free and safe. This year organizers hired 300 private security officers and ask for 200 policemen from the Fuerza Publica.
The main events are always free and usually are concerts that presents national and international artists. Afrojack, Beenie Man, Charlie Zaa,Los Cafres, MTZ y Piso 21, Sebastian Yatra, Victor Manuelle, Wisin and Yandel, are some of the artists that will be performing on the the main stage.
