The first week of 2021 saw an 11% increase in new positive cases for COVID-19, compared to the last week of December. A total of 7235 new infections were recorded nationally, 725 more than the 6510 recorded at the end of December.

In fact, in the epidemiological week 01 of 2021, the 10 cantons that registered the most new cases were Alajuela, San José, Cartago, San Carlos, Desamparados, Pococí, Corredores, Goicoechea, Heredia and Pérez Zeledón.

For this reason, the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Care (CNE) has decided to raise the alert level in 14 cantons. The province of Alajuela reports six cantons that have entered this category due to a considerable increase in cases in recent weeks: Grecia, Naranjo, Sarchí, Orotina, San Carlos and Guatuso.

The other cantons on the rise are Vázquez de Coronado, Alajuelita, Curridabat, Cartago, Santo Domingo, Quepos, Matina and Guácimo. The locality that showed the greatest increase in the number of cases was Coronado, as it had a 134% increase in positive cases for COVID-19, rising from 78 to 164 cases in the last two weeks.

The central canton of Carthage has gone on orange alert for the first time since the coronavirus emergency began, rising from 215 cases to 374 in one week, a 74 per cent increase in two weeks. It is the municipality with the highest Cantonal Risk Index of the 14 announced cantons.

Another case that stands out is Greece, which after 23 weeks on yellow alert, has raised its risk level to orange from 132 to 169 in the last fortnight.

“With the presence of new cases, the need to raise more cantons to an orange alert was determined. This means that we must be much more rigorous in the application of self-care protocols to protect ourselves from COVID-19,” explained Alexander Solís, president of the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Care (CNE).

According to the report of the last epidemiological week, the virus is settling again in cantons within the Greater Metropolitan Area by the beginning of 2021. This follows a concentration of higher risk alerts outside the GAM during November and December.

Cantons that lower their risk level

Belén, Liberia, Esparza and Montes de Oro go down from orange to yellow alert. According to the data from the Situation Analysis Room, the four cantons reduced the incidence of cases and with it the level of risk in the localities.

In total, 57 cantons will remain on yellow alert for the next two weeks, yet authorities are calling on the population to enforce health measures within homes, in open spaces, in workplaces and in communities to prevent more cantons from increasing their risk rates.

“The Shared Management Model brings together the efforts of many institutions to define a line of work that reduces the possibilities of contagion, and for this model to be effective, we need the good will and good action of the citizens, which is why we are insistent in asking to act with great responsibility and a critical sense towards prevention,” added Solís.
